What is Wilderness?

Wilderness with a capital “W”

For those of us in the lower Gunnison watershed, a weekend activity usually starts with the short drive up Kebler Pass, just east of Paonia, to one of the many hiking trails in the area. Upon parking the car, and hiking a short distance past the trailhead into the forest, one may come across a small sign off to the side of the trail. It usually reads “Entering a Wilderness Area”, and is often joined by a US Forest Service logo. If you are like us, you may breeze past this boundary marker, giving it little time of day. But what does this really mean?

Below, we have put together a story map about all of the magic and inquiry into entering a Wilderness area, and what you should know in order to recreate responsibly.
