April 2015 – Tell the BLM to consider a conservation-minded alternative!
The Bull Mountain Unit Master Development Plan (MDP) is a proposal by SG Interests to drill up to 146 new gas wells, 4 wastewater disposal wells, 16 miles of new road construction, 8 miles of new “cross-country” pipeline, and 4 new compressor stations near McClure Pass. The proposed development spans nearly 20,000 acres in some of Colorado’s best wildlife habitat. Even though most of the surface is private, the minerals are public so it is important that you join us and participate in the BLM’s public comment period, which ends on Thursday, April 16.
The Conservation Center has been following this proposal since 2006. Click here for a history of the project and our past comment letters.
What to include in your comments?
Our friends at Citizens for a Healthy Community have developed a number of resources to help you produce your comment letter including a fact sheet and comment writing suggestion sheet.
Suggested requests of BLM include:
- BLM needs to consider a conservation-oriented alternative and additional mitigation measures
- BLM should require increased bonding to cover cleanup and remediation of a catastrophic accident and to ensure complete reclamation at the project’s completion.
- BLM should require baseline and on-going monitoring of air, water, and wildlife.
- BLM should require additional mitigation measures to prevent harm to big game animals.
- BLM failed to consider the social cost of carbon (SCC).
- BLM should issue a moratorium on new oil and gas projects until the Uncompahgre Field Office Resource Management Plan has been completed.
